Programs and Events Click here for information on our regular monthly meetings; agendas, minutes and financial reports are all posted. Coming Up: July Board of Directors Meeting: Tuesday, July 20 This month, the Board will meet at the original Packard Library, now home to Friday Night Live, Yuba-Sutter's successful youth outreach program. FNL is one of the Friends' community partners, receiving donations from us of books on reading, literature, writing and other forms of expression. The Packard is located across from the post office on C Street in Marysville. The meeting starts at 3:30 pm, but come at 2:45 pm to learn about the history of the Packard and how this great old building is being used today. (all members are welcome) Annual Antiques Appraisal Day: Saturday, August 28 Once again, antiques expert and radio host John Humphries is bringing his extensive knowledge to the Community Room of the Yuba County Library for the Friends' summer fundraiser. He'll be evaluating art and artifacts brought in by the public, who pay a nominal fee to the Friends for his professional opinion. This year all proceeds will be put towards the purchase of a new microfilm reader for the California Room, the Library's unique collection of Californiana. Cost of the evaluation is $5 for one item; $10 for three items. The room is set up so that it is possible to listen in to John's commentary, an education in itself! There will be two sessions: 11:00 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Evaluations are on a first-come, first-served basis, with members of the Friends of the Library given preference. (Yet another reason to join -- for only $12 a year!)
Here are reports on some Spring 2010 events:
A brief business meeting to elect officers for 2010-11 was followed by readings and recitations of poetry by local poets and enthusiasts, complemented by pie and beverages. For election results and other details, click here. The Appeal-Democrat sent photographer Chris Kaufman to record the event; click here to see the item in the 5/19 edition, and for the slide show, click here.
The Library's Community Room.was the standing-room-only launching pad for an exciting new adventures series for young readers by Karen Kostlivy. She and a friend read excerpts from the first volume, Cyber Writers and the Zebra of Life, and has donated a dozen copies of it to the Library for immediate check-out. If you would like your very own autographed first edition, The Friends is now selling them at our new non-profit book emporium, The Packard Bookshop, at 113 D Street in Marysville. As she did at the launch event, Karen is donating $1 to the Friends from each book sold at this event, so come on over and get your copy! The shop is open Mon. - Sat., 11 am to 4:30 pm. The Spring Book Sale netted more than $1,000, thanks to book-loving buyers and a big, hard-working team of Friends of the Library volunteers, including April, Arlene, Bee, Carmen, Chuck, Cynthia, Dana, Dorothy, Gretchen, Hope, Inez, Inger, Jay, Joann, Jerry, June, Katharine, Kathleen, Lelah, Lily, Mary, Merry, Michael, Miriam, Moses, Nancy, Pamela, Rahma, Rusty, Stan, Victor and two teams of kids from Camp Singer.
